Default Opinion on my Photoshop Skills - Rip me a new one if you must

Allright, here are two photos, one in its original state and one photoshopped, my question is: Is the photshopped one indeed better than the original? Am I wasting time trying to edit it? What do you think? Suggestions?

Yes the first picture looks better.

What did you do in Photoshop ? Maybe someone can give you advice on the tools you are using.

When photo shopping use auto contrast, unsharp mask and smart sharpen in this order, you will be amazed!

Ok, I was in the right ballpark but I was doing this:

Unsharp Mask (played a little with the level)
    Auto levels.

Will remember to use Smart Sharpen.

Thanks all! I went to this camera shop yesterday and they didn't know shit about anything (even camera gear.) Kinda disappointing.
I have to come to TCB to get some good advice. Thank you for help on this subject.

    i LoL'ed!

When editing pictures i use what looks best for that particular image. If its too much contrast i decrease. Is it to flawsy i jump the contrast, and after playing with that i check the levels to get it the way i want it. And to make it pop a bit more out ill use the USM(when needed)

When all thats done i crop it to make the subject the only thing that i want the viewer to see.

Its really to much options on how to editing a picture to name it all. youtube have nice tutorials on almost everything your curious about.

I actually prefer auto tone as a starting point, cos it seems to adjust the colour levels to a more natural level & do the contrast at the same time, but the rest is spot on, IMO.

Have a real play around with the smart sharpen tool - it's really fucing powerful!! I managed to save a whole bunch of detail using the motion-blur-correction function alone!
