My problem is that I havent practiced this technique enough to not look at the camera. Which I know is a complete giveaway that it is on and whatever you are looking at is what you are shooting. It would just suck if the wrong person saw this, who was not your wife, and started "keeping an eye on you". Always be aware of your surroundings.

Dave, what would you suggest as a "hip-shot camera". what was the photographer in the pics using?

    Thanks for this,
    sp

The Canon PowerShot seems like a good camera for these kinds of shots.

This thread is REALLY helpful by the way. I've done a few candid shots, but I think the suggestions here could really help me technique, and help me become a more active poster instead of just an active commenter.

how can I hide it when I try to get a hip shot? somebody could see behind me easily.
Hmm can't turn it off? Anyway how about putting a dark piece of paper on it and hold it with your thumb. Or perhaps use cleartape on one edge so you can still flip it open, but it will remain in place. Be sure to remove it after you're done with your shooting though, that stuff gets really sticky and messy when it's on too long (think weeks)

I agree to the advice to learn to shoot without looking at the camera to aim, it gives much less clues about what you're up to. Also of course it's easier in an area which is crowded and where cams are common to make it look less suspicious. When you buy a new cam, advicable a small less spottable one, it always take some time how to aim, so practice and adjust after looking at the pics at your computer.
Another good idea is to carry shopping bags in your hand where you hold your cam. The cam is of course still possible to spot for some people, but it's amazing how many that don't... The second last advice I have to give is to equip yourself with the eyes not paying attention to your "targets", rather have the eyes fixed 1000 meters away approimately. The last advice is to keep an eye on the people around, there is too often some self-appointed moralists around to watch out for hobby-candid-shooters like us willing to put us in to potential trouble... Finally, take care, and enjoy your hobby.

i'm new to this & use a fuji z5. i had been practicing and getting far too many 'air' shots due to tilting the hand too much. but today i got a good portion of good shots. decided to hang about a city centre and almost plough into bottlenecks with varying degrees of success; sometimes there was not enough light and other shots were blurred due to excitement. i'll post some in a couple of weeks after editing.
