If the main concern is about people who have slow connections, wouldn't it be more appropriate to simply make the default for showing avatars "off" so that the people with high speed connections can see avatars that are large enough to be worth seeing ? Those people that have dial up would have the default of not even having avatars being sent to them.

In reality, I don't really have a beef with the new size because an avatar really isn't why anyone uses this board. But they were a nice little personalization. Someone here said they simply deleted theirs because in the new size it just didn't work. I may end up doing the same, because I think the comedy of my avatar was that the dude has 6 cameras strapped to him. At this size it looks more like some guy with a camera that dresses funny. The impact is gone.

I agree, 80x80 is so small that the quality has been squashed. If this was a text message board then who cares, but since this is a photography board the avatar should be at least big enough to see and enjoy. Please don't sacrifice art for only a marginal increase in efficiency.

No offense to the board ops, but perhaps the board (speed) is suffering from feature-bloat. All those new galleries and category sections each with its own sub-sections and preview pics must consume a lot of bandwidth. I don't even visit them, it's too confusing to me.

Ok, no wonder. LOL, when I went to put on my avatar I was wonder why mine was smaller than some have, mine is was 80x80, yet other seemed much larger than that.
So this clarifies my confusion, thanks.

It depends on what you have your screen monitor set to .

I have mine at 1024 x 768 and I see everything fine.

The forum is really set up to be viewed at 800 X 600.

That is going to take some more programming....... something we can work of for sure later.
